Hester Bancroft (American, 1889 - 1963)
Bancroft was born in Ithaca, New York and remained in New York throughout her career. She was a sculptor of both animals and the human body and also produced paintings of similar subjects. Her choice of animal subjects ran from the all American grizzly bear to more domestic cockerels and her style was naturalistic and detailed. She took care to maintain a simplicity of composition and to zoological and anatomical study. Bancroft was also well recognised during her lifetime for her work as an art educator and promoter of the dicipline of modern sculpture.
